Magpie Search&Alert is a search engine that you can use on your website to provide information from a number of sources. It's similar to adding something like Google to your site, but there are some extra features developed with the Public Sector in mind:

  • You can add more than one site to be searched
  • You can control how the results are displayed
  • Users can sort results by date or relevance
  • There are no adverts linking to other websites
  • The results page can carry your branding and look exactly the same as the rest of your site

Search&Alert for the Public Sector

Magpie Search&Alert acts as an alerting tool by searching for the citizen and delivering time specified results via email. The LGCL/ IPSV taxonomies allow the citizen to easily source the information they are looking for. Magpie Search&Alert is specifically designed to save the citizen huge amounts of time by managing the information overload more effectively, whilst providing a higher quality of information retrieval.

Magpie Search&Alert federated search allows a co-mingled view of council, events, local interest, central government and niche websites including blogs, RSS feeds and a number of other sources. Public sector taxonomies such as IPSV can be integrated to help the user search, retrieve, and view a set of results around a topic more effectively.

Watford Borough Council use it as a local search engine. They selected a number of sites of interest to the citizens of Watford. Search&Alert gathers pages from these sites up to 4 times a day and makes them accessible to people using the search and alert facilities on the Watford BC website.

Guernsey are doing something similar. There are a number of sites which the States of Guernsey controls but which don't use the same Content Management System. To search across and receive alerts from all of these sites is only possible with an advanced application like Magpie Search&Alert.
